It all began with an idea.
Your host, Alex, and his husband, Larry, traveled to Oaxaca City in the middle of the pandemic and fell in love — with the food, the culture and the people. Food lovers from both Australia and New York, the owners of La Gema came to the capital of the state of Oaxaca to explore its culinary experiences. Criollo, Los Danzantes, El Destilado, Casa Oaxaca and Restaurante Pitiona to name a few. To add a beach component to their trip, Alex and Larry went to Puerto Esondido and found paradise. The views, waves, warm water and all of the other sights, sounds and tastes of Puerto made them want to be a part of this community. They went on a hunt to find the best location where they could develop a luxurious Villa — one that they would want to live in but would also be proud to offer to others.
La Gema Escondida was born.
Born of a love for the spirit of the place but also of love for its sheer beauty, the owners re-imagined the property and created a modern, minimal and Mexican home. They want you to join them in loving this small slice of heaven. Because the food experience is so much a part of Oaxaca, Larry and Alex also wanted to offer the services of a resident chef, steeped in the history and culinary spirit of Oaxaca. They met chef, Antonia, and thought she would be perfect. They set out to create a business that would improve her life and that of her family and now want you to enjoy her charisma but most importantly everything that she cooks.
